Teflon™ Frequently Asked Questions
How can I purchase Teflon™ coatings?
Intech Services is the sole US distributor for Teflon™ industrial coatings. We maintain an extensive inventory of the various industrial coatings. We access each customer's equipment to determine that they will successfully apply Teflon™ coatings. If you are a new customer, please take a moment to fill out this simple form and we will be in touch with you within one business day.
Any substrate which can withstand a high temperature cure can potentially be coated with Teflon™ coatings. Examples include: carbon steel, stainless steel, rolled aluminum, cast iron, cast aluminum, hard anodized aluminum, brass, nickel, chrome plated steel, nickel, and plated steel. Other substrates such as glass, ceramics, and copper can also be coated with special procedure.
What substrates can be coated with Teflon™ industrial coatings?
1) On substrates that cannot handle a minimum cure of 350ºF , such as many plastics.
Where are Teflon™ coatings not feasible?
2) Where the continuous operating temperature is above 550ºF.
3) On parts which are too large to fit into an oven. Ovens large enough to coat rail tank cars are available at many Licensed Industrial Applicators.
Are there "air dry" versions of Teflon™ coatings?
No, all Teflon™ industrial coatings require a high temperature cure (>325ºF part temperature).
What are the operating temperature limitations of Teflon™ coatings?
Depending on the specific product, Teflon™ fluoropolymer coatings are functional from cryogenic temperatures to 600ºF. Specific information for each product family can be found in the Product Overview.
Can Teflon™ coatings be used for food contact applications?
Many Teflon™ coating systems are FDA conforming to 21.CFR governing components of coatings for direct food contact when applied according to Fact Sheet instructions.
Please note, when using a multiple coat system, all components (primer, midcoat, topcoat) must be FDA conforming in order for the system to be FDA conforming. To verify the acceptability of Teflon™ industrial coatings in specific uses, contact Intech.
Are Teflon™ nonstick coatings USDA compliant?
As long as the coating system is FDA conforming, then it is also USDA compliant. A special letter from the applicator is required. For more information, contact Intech Services.
Can Teflon™ coatings be used in medical end-uses?
Strict restrictions apply to end-uses in this field. For more information, contact Intech Services.
What equipment is required to apply Teflon™ coatings?
Please go to the registration form and Intech will access your equipment to see if you can successfully apply Teflon™ fluoropolymer coatings.
Where can I get prototype parts coated?
DuPont has established a network of Licensed Industrial Applicators who specialize in coating and coating selection. Fill out this form if you want to get a recommendation for where to get your parts coated.
In what forms are Teflon™ coatings available?
Water-based dispersions, solvent-based dispersions, and powder are the forms of Teflon™ coatings available from Intech Services.
Are Teflon™ nonstick coatings available in different colors?
Because Teflon™ coatings are designed to be functional coatings rather that aesthetic, there is a limited color selection commercially available. In general, Teflon™ coatings are sold in gray, black, green, blue, red, and brown, and unpigmented.
Are Teflon™ coatings optically clear?
Although there are unpigmented versions of Teflon™ coatings, they are not optically clear.
What is the shelf life of Teflon™ coatings?
Liquid coatings have a shelf life of 6 -18 months from the date of manufacture. Powders have indefinite shelf life. For specific product shelf life, please contact us.
Do Teflon™ products comply with the European REACH regulation?
REACH requires registration for individual substances (on their own or in preparations) greater than one metric ton per year produced or imported. All products sold by Chemours legal entities in Europe to our EEA customers successfully comply with REACH regulatory requirements. This compliance includes pre-registration and registration, whatever the tonnage band, in line with the deadlines and plans to complete the remaining registrations as set by the legislation. To read more on Chemours and the REACH regulation, please see Chemours’ website information.
